Tuesday, October 22, 2002 Contact: Notes Team (847) 385-7472/7473 $1 million NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile (Grade I) Aldebaran/Beat Hollow -- Aldebaran and Beat Hollow, who arrived in Chicago on a Monday flight from New York with four other Bobby Frankel-trained Breeders' Cup participants, were walked around Arlington Park's Barn 12 Tuesday morning and were scheduled for a shedrow stroll later in the afternoon. Before the flight, both horses drilled at Belmont Park. Beat Hollow, with exercise rider Jose Cuervas in the saddle, worked 4f in 48 4/5. Aldebaran worked in company to the inside of a stablemate and was officially clocked for 5f in 1:01 2/5. Beat Hollow, a four-time Grade 1 winner at distances from 1 1/8 miles to 1 ¼ miles, finished third in the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland in his first one-mile race since his career debut in September 1999. Frankel, however, is concerned about the loss because it was a learning experience for both him and the horse. "Beat Hollow didn't run his race, but we learned a lot from that race," Frankel said. "You don't want to make the lead too soon with him. The last two races he lost, it was the same scenario: he made the lead too soon. You've got to hide him a little longer. At the three-sixteenths pole or inside the quarter pole, you've got to let him come out and fire at some horses. "At Keeneland, it looked like he made the lead easy and then all of sudden they were right on top of him and ran by him. But he did try to come back at them at the wire." "I'm glad I ran him at Keeneland because I learned something. Before, I thought that he just didn't run his race in the Arlington Million (a race he won by a head). But it was the same scenario both times. He made the lead too early turning for home. He just needs a target to shoot at." Aldebaran, meanwhile, will return to turf for the Mile. In his last start, the 4yo son of Mr. Prospector finished second to Sprint contender Bonapaw in the Sept. 29 Vosburgh at Belmont Park. "Aldebaran has had a nice four weeks since his race, which I think is good for him," Frankel said. Boston Common -- Richard Englander's Boston Common galloped two miles at Delaware Park under exercise rider Kirsten Troxal Tuesday morning. Trainer Michael Pino confirmed Rene Douglas as the rider for Boston Common in the Mile. Douglas has not ridden Boston Common before. Boston Common is scheduled to ship late Wednesday evening and, according to Pino, "would probably jog Thursday, depending on how the flight goes." Chopinina -- See Filly & Mare Turf Del Mar Show -- Walked the shedrow at Belmont Park Tuesday after working Monday. He'll ship to Arlington Tuesday. Asked the difference between his 10th-place finish at Woodbine in the Atto Mile and his victory in the Bernard Baruch at Saratoga, trainer Bill Mott said, "The race in Canada was a mystery." Dress To Thrill -- The Irish-bred filly by Danehill was due in to Arlington late Tuesday night after a trip that took her from Ireland to France to the U.S. She was not expected to arrive at the track until after midnight. Dermot Weld trains the 3yo filly, who has won four straight races, the most recent being the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on Oct. 5. Dress to Thrill will have regular rider Pat Smullen aboard Saturday. Domedriver -- The 4yo Irish-bred arrived at Arlington early Tuesday morning (2 a.m.) after a flight from France and is stabled in the quarantine barn. The Pascal Bary-trained colt won the Prix Daniel Wildenstein at Longchamp in his most recent start on Oct. 5. Regular rider Thierry Thulliez will be aboard in the Mile. D'wildcat -- See Sprint Forbidden Apple -- The 7yo son of Pleasant Colony galloped 1 ¼ Tuesday at Belmont Park and will ship to Arlington Wednesday. Trainer Christophe Clement was en route from Florida to New York Tuesday. Good Journey -- Working on a streak of four straight victories, the 6yo son of Nureyev galloped 1 1/16 miles Tuesday morning at Arlington Park as he moved one day closer to his date on Saturday with the Breeders' Cup Mile. Trainer Wallace Dollase, who has one Breeders' Cup victory and four seconds in 12 chances, said his Atto Mile winner will work 4f on the Arlington turf Wednesday morning. "It will just be a slow half-mile," the trainer said. "It will give him a chance to get accustomed to his surroundings." Dollase said one of the things he especially likes about his Mile contestant is that "he has a great mind, and he makes himself at home wherever he is." "Good horses are smart," he continued. "Sometimes they even outsmart their trainers." Arlington's leading rider, Rene Douglas, will be in the irons for the horse's turf work. Gossamer -- The Luca Cumani-trained filly, who was pre-entered in both the Mile (first preference) and the Filly & Mare Turf, had her first look at Arlington Park Tuesday morning after clearing quarantine at 9 a.m. With Cumani assistant Ian Willows supervising, the daughter of Sadler's Wells walked and trotted around the main Arlington track, then took a walk through the paddock and down the horse path back to the quarantine barn. Regular exercise rider Debra Jones was aboard. "It was just a bit of a sightseeing tour," Willows said. "She traveled really well and we just wanted her to stretch her legs a bit. She went down one path, around the track, then through the paddock to have a look. She went out with a pony and was very relaxed." Cumani is due to arrive at Arlington Tuesday afternoon. Gossamer will be ridden by Jamie Spencer. Green Fee -- On the Preference List for the Mile, Green Fee walked the shedrow this morning at trainer Dan Peitz's barn at Belmont Park. "We're just staying put, sitting on the fence," Peitz said. "It really isn't that frustrating. My feeling is that if we get it, we get in. If it's meant to be, then it will happen. But if we don't get in, I have a pretty good backup plan. I'll run Green Fee in the Knickerbocker Handicap at Aqueduct, where he'll probably be one of the favorites." If Green Fee gets in, he will ship to Arlington Park on Thursday. John Velazquez will ride. Hawk Wing -- See Classic Landseer -- The 3yo Danehill colt, who has already proven himself in the U.S. with a victory in the Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile on Oct. 6, was due in to Arlington Tuesday afternoon along with seven stablemates trained by Aidan O'Brien. The English-bred's first victory of the year came in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp in May. Edgar Prado rode Landseer in his Keeneland win, while Mick Kinane was aboard in France and England. No rider has been confirmed as yet for Saturday. Medecis -- The 3yo colt by Machiavellian cleared quarantine Tuesday morning and walked around Arlington's main track to stretch his legs with exercise rider Nicholas Guesdon aboard. Supervising the activity was Jean-Pierre Mallet, assistant to trainer Christiane Head-Maalek. The English-bred colt will be ridden by Alex Solis for the first time in the Mile. Medecis was beaten a neck in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on Oct. 13, his most recent race. North East Bound -- Trainer William Perry remained hopeful Tuesday morning that his 2000 Mile runner-up might yet get into the field despite his seventh position on the race's preference list. "I'm still hoping we can get in, but it doesn't look good," he said from his barn at Monmouth Park. North East Bound walked the shedrow Tuesday morning. If the 6yo gelding does make the field, he will be vanned from Monmouth following Wednesday's post position draw. Nuclear Debate -- Trainer Darrell Vienna waxed philosophical Tuesday after watching the 7yo gelding work 4f around the dogs on the turf course in 53 breezing with exercise rider Rhett Fincher. "He was a miler who never got the opportunity," said Vienna. "Now, in the twilight of his career, he gets the chance. He's brand new in terms of legs and disposition." Nuclear Debate, a champion sprinter in England, was stretched to one mile for the first time in a 45-race career in his last start in the Atto Mile at Woodbine Sept. 8 and ran a strong third. "The old guy is coming up to this race great," said Vienna. "I wanted to go to Japan and run him in two sprints, but Mr. Herrick (owner Bill Herrick) said, 'Let's try Canada, and then we could go to the Breeders' Cup.'" Vienna bought Nuclear Debate for Herrick at the Tattersalls Sale at Newmarket last fall for $265,000. Nuclear Debate seems to have found a new lease on life at the added distance. "Middle of the turn, he tried to rebreak," said Fincher of the horse's spirited work. One Won One -- Remains next-to-last on the Preference List. Rock of Gibraltar -- The 3yo colt by Danehill, winner of seven straight over the last two seasons, was due at Arlington Tuesday afternoon with the other seven horses trained by Aidan O'Brien. The Irish-bred was pre-entered in both the Mile (first preference) and the Classic, but O'Brien is not expected to make his choice until entry time on Wednesday. Mick Kinane, who has been aboard in the Rock's last four wins, is scheduled to ride. The Tin Man -- See Turf Thunderello -- See Sprint Touch of the Blues -- Trainer Neil Drysdale said his 5yo Mile prospect walked the shedrow at Keeneland Tuesday morning following a Monday work. The son of Cadeaux Genereux, owned by Gainsborough Farm, finished second, beaten a neck, in Keeneland's Shadwell Turf Mile. He'll be vanned to Arlington Wednesday from Keeneland. Monday, October 21, 2002 Contact: Notes Team (847) 385-7472/7473 $1 million NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile (Grade I) Aldebaran/Beat Hollow -- Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel worked each of his seven Breeders' Cup participants Monday, including Mile contenders Aldebaran and Beat Hollow. Aldebaran covered 5f in 1:01 2/5, and Beat Hollow went 4f in 48 4/5 on the main track at Belmont Park in New York in preparation for the NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile. Frankel, who won his first Breeders' Cup race last year in the Sprint with Squirtle Squirt, will ride Jorge Chavez on Aldebaran and Jerry Bailey on Beat Hollow. Chavez, who rode Aldebaran in his first two U.S. starts last fall, takes over for Pat Day, who opted to ride Atto Mile winner Good Journey. Beat Hollow, the highest money-earner in the Mile with $1.8 million, won a trio of Grade I races this year, including the Arlington Million in August. The 5yo son of Sadler's Wells finished third in the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland in his last start. Aldebaran won his first start of the year at Santa Anita in March and finished second in each subsequent start; all main track races. The 4yo Mr. Prospector colt debuted in the U.S. the day after last year's Breeders' Cup at Belmont Park with a powerful 3 ¼-length triumph in the Nassau Handicap at one mile on turf in 1:33 3/5. Boston Common -- Richard Englander's Boston Common continued preparation for his career grass debut by galloping Monday morning at Delaware Park under exercise rider Kirsten Troxal. Trainer Michael Pino plans to fly Boston Common to Chicago on Wednesday night and then gallop up to the Mile. Rene Douglas, the leading rider at the current Arlington meet, is under consideration for the mount Saturday. Chopinina -- See Filly & Mare Turf Del Mar Show -- The 4yo son of Theatrical breezed 4f in 48 3/5 at Belmont Park Monday. Trainer Bill Mott said he went the first quarter in 24 1/5. "He went well," Mott said. "The horse is doing very well." The horse will walk Tuesday and gallop Wednesday before shipping to Chicago with a planeload of New York horses. Pat Valenzuela is the jockey Saturday and Mott will arrive Wednesday evening. Domedriver -- The 4yo son of Indian Ridge trained by Pascal Bary was due to arrive at Arlington Park late Monday. Domedriver won the Prix Daniel Wildenstein at Longchamp in his last start on Oct. 5 with Thierry Thulliez aboard. Dress to Thrill -- The Dermot Weld-trained 3yo filly by Danehill is due in Tuesday night after a flight from Ireland. The Irish-bred daughter of Danehill has won all her four starts this year, including the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket in her most recent outing on Oct. 5. Patrick Smullen rides. D'wildcat -- See Sprint Forbidden Apple -- The 7yo son of Pleasant Colony galloped at Belmont Park Monday. "Both [Forbidden Apple and stablemate, Filly & Mare Turf entrant Voodoo Dancer] galloped well and are doing well," said trainer Christophe Clement. Corey Nakatani will ride Saturday. Good Journey -- The winner of the Atto Mile and three others prior to that race at Woodbine Race Course galloped 1 1/16 miles Monday morning at Arlington Park under the watchful eye of trainer Wallace Dollase. The trainer said the 6yo son of Nureyev has responded well to the weather. "He just loves this weather," Dollase said. "I intend to work him on Wednesday on the turf course," Dollase said. "I'll work him a half-mile on the turf course just so he can get a feel of it." Pat Day has the call on the horse. Dollase said the Hall of Fame rider, who has been aboard in the horse's three starts this year, is quite impressed with Good Journey. "He was very impressed with the Atto Mile," Dollase said, adding, "He said he had a lot of horse left." Dollase has one Breeders' Cup win -- the 1996 Distaff with Jewel Princess and four seconds among his 12 starters. Gossamer -- The Luca Cumani-trained 3yo filly by Sadler's Wells arrived on a flight from England late Monday night and was bedded down in the quarantine barn at 12:20 a.m. The English-bred ran third in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp last out on Sept. 8. Green Fee -- Trainer Dan Peitz sent his 6yo Green Dancer horse 5f around the "dogs" on Belmont Park's soft inner turf course this morning in 1:02 3/5, breezing with jockey John Velazquez, and now will be hoping to catch a break in order to run in the Mile. "Right now, we're the odd man out," Peitz said. "We just don't know if we're going to get into the race. When we were planning Green Fee's fall campaign, my goal was to win the Kelso Handicap and then go in the Breeders' Cup. I remember telling that to Green Fee's groom, Alberto Nolazco, and his reaction was 'Really? That's a good plan.' " "The Lows (Robert and Lawana Low) own Green Fee and they own his dam (Rask, by Rahy). My thinking was that Green Fee was doing so well that, if he ran a winning race in the Kelso, he would have earned his way to the Breeders' Cup and get a chance to increase the value of the mare. I knew he had a good chance in the Kelso because of the way he trained, because he love a mile at Belmont and because, in that race, he only had to carry 113 pounds. "If we manage to get into the Breeders' Cup, he will pick up 13 pounds from the Kelso. But he is a come-from-behind horse and he should get an honest pace. As far as I know, if we get in, Johnny (Velazquez) will ride him. If we don't get in, we'll probably look at a race here in New York." If Green Fee makes the cut, Peitz said he will ship on Thursday with other New York horses. Hawk Wing -- See Classic Landseer -- The Aidan O'Brien-trained 3yo by Danehill, winner of the Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile last out on Oct. 6, is scheduled to arrive with the large Coolmore contingent from Ireland on Tuesday evening. The English-bred colt won the Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp in May. Medecis -- The English-bred colt by Machiavellian, second in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on Oct. 13, arrived on a flight from England late Monday night. Christiane Head-Maarek trains the 3yo, who was bedded down in the quarantine barn after arriving at Arlington at 12:20 a.m. Alex Solis will ride Medecis for the first time in the Mile. North East Bound -- Though he was runner-up in the 2000 Breeders' Cup Mile, it figures to be a longshot for the horse to make the field in Saturday's Mile. He sits seventh on the race's preference list. Nevertheless, trainer William Perry sent him out for a 4f work Monday morning at Monmouth Park as his final preparation for the race. The 6yo gelding was caught in 48 seconds flat with regular rider Jose Velez Jr. in the saddle. Velez will have the ride if the horse makes it into the field. Perry said if North East Bound gets into the race, he will ship him to the Chicago-area track on Wednesday afternoon. Nuclear Debate -- The 7yo gelding galloped 1 1/8 miles on the main track with exercise rider Rhett Fincher. Scott Chaney, assistant to trainer Darrell Vienna, said the horse would work a half-mile on turf Tuesday. Nuclear Debate arrived Saturday on an uneventful flight from California. A Group I winning sprinter, he was stretched to a mile for the first time in his 45-race career Sept. 8 and finished third in the Atto Mile at Woodbine. "He passed every one but two," said Chaney of the horse's auspicious debut at one mile. "He's an old pro and shipped well. He's been around the world twice." Lorenzo Contreras is his groom. Vienna is scheduled to arrive this evening. Gary Stevens has the call back. One Won One -- Remains next-to-last on the preference list. Rock of Gibraltar -- The 3yo colt by Danehill is due in Tuesday evening with the strong Aidan O'Brien-trained contingent. The Irish-bred was pre-entered in both the Mile and the Classic, with the Mile listed as first choice. Rock of Gibraltar, who has won seven straight races dating back to last October's Grand Criterium at Longchamp, won the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp in his most recent start on Sept. 8. He has won 10 of 12 lifetime starts, but has never gone farther than one mile. The Tin Man -- See Turf Thunderello -- See Sprint Touch of the Blues -- The 5yo son of Cadeau Genereux, who was beaten a neck in Keeneland's Shadwell Turf Mile on Oct. 6, worked an "easy half-mile" on the Keeneland turf Monday morning, said trainer Neil Drysdale from his Hollywood Park base. He was clocked in 51 seconds for 4f. The horse, owned by Gainsborough Farm, will be vanned to Arlington Park from Keeneland on Wednesday. Kent Desormeaux will ride.
