Illinois Lawmakers Preparing to Adjourn
Update from Mike Campbell, President of the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association
Hello, Fellow Horsemen:
Today is the last scheduled day of the General Assembly's spring session, and we're urging lawmakers to approve Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association priorities before scheduled adjournment at midnight tonight.
Negotiators worked late into the night Thursday on the terms of a gaming expansion bill that would allow tracks to offer slot machines as a means to fund purses. This same measure also is expected to authorize a Chicago casino and four additional casinos for Illinois, plus allow existing casinos to expand their capacities.
Illinois horsemen, tracks and other interested parties have already agreed to the basic framework of this plan, and the Senate has already approved it in the form of Senate Bill 1739. Today, we're encouraging the House to advance this plan without modifying the terms of that agreed framework.
Meanwhile, the Senate later today is expected to vote on a separate measure that would reauthorize ADW through Jan. 31, 2014. The House has already approved this measure, SB 1884, and all that remains is for the Senate to do the same.
Together with our lobbying team, ITHA Executive Director Glen Berman and I look forward to our continued discussions with Senate and House legislative leadership and other lawmakers who recognize and appreciate the importance of the horse racing industry to Illinois.
Events are always fast-moving on the final day of session. We will keep you posted.
