HAWTHORNE RACE COURSE TO HOST HOLIDAY WEEKEND RACING, PARTIES
Premier Gold Cup Stake Gets a New Date, Live WGN Broadcast Thanksgiving Weekend
NOVEMBER 21, 2013 (Chicago)- Hawthorne Race Course's premier fall racing event, the Hawthorne Gold Cup, presented by Xpressbet, has been moved to November 30. With top racehorses hailing from across the country, the Hawthorne Gold Cup promises to be an exciting race. With a party on every floor of the historic track's grandstand, the Hawthorne Gold Cup has something to offer everyone from the serious horseplayer to a first time visitor to the track looking for new holiday entertainment.
"We moved the Gold Cup to the holiday weekend to make it a part of family and sports holiday traditions," said Tim Carey, president and general manager of Hawthorne Race Course. "Thanksgiving weekend has so many great sporting events starting on Thanksgiving day and lasting through the entire weekend, it seemed like a perfect fit when we were looking to move our premier fall race, the Gold Cup."
Hawthorne Gold Cup weekend begins the day after Thanksgiving with the Stickney track's seventh annual Guys Day Out, featuring twilight racing; $2 admission, beers and hot dogs; door buster raffle prizes; vendors selling and sampling everything from tequila to t-shirts. Shannon, the Loop Rock Girl (97.9 FM) will party at Hawthorne from 3-7, signing her exclusive Hawthorne calendar.
"Gold Cup weekend will give fans the opportunity to see the horses' race at night," Carey said. "With a 3 pm first post time on Friday and a 2 pm first post on Saturday, the Gold Cup will run at 5:45 and fans will have the rare chance to watch these horses barrel down the stretch under the lights."
Saturday, Gold Cup day is chock full of activities and events, including a jockey autograph session from noon until 2 pm. Hawthorne's jockeys will be signing photographs to raise money for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. In addition, the first 1,000 guests to pay admission after 11 am will receive a free Gold Cup long-sleeve t-shirt, courtesy of Xpressbet.com, presenting sponsor of the race. Hawthorne will run nine live races on Saturday and will have a dedicated new fan education area on the first floor of the grandstand for attendees who are new to the horse racing experience. The grandstand's first floor will also be home to a live WGN-TV broadcast from 5-6 pm.
The Gold Cup will give fans the opportunity to enjoy Hawthorne's new indoor party spaces, the newly remodeled grandstands and dining room, as well as the luxury Turf Club, which is open to the public. From the $2 hot dog specials on Friday to the luxury $70 Turf Club ticket on Saturday, Hawthorne has accommodations for everyone.
Hawthorne races five days per week through the end of the year and concludes Sunday, December 29. Live racing will be conducted every Wednesday-Sunday. First post Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday is 2:10 pm. On Fridays through November 29, first post will be 3:10 pm. Saturday, October 5 is a special night racing card with a 5:00 pm first post. Beginning December 4, first post will be 1:20 pm daily. Hawthorne Race Course is located in Stickney IL at 3501 S.
