Chicagoland Chamber Emphasizes Strong Support for Gaming Expansion Legislation

CHICAGO, IL – The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce today reiterated their strong support for Senate Bill 1739, which includes development of a Chicago casino and employs an economic development tool to invigorate Chicago’s convention and tourism business and provide economic spillover for the city’s retail and hospitality industries.

“The gaming expansion legislation provides a critical platform for growth in Chicago,” said Gerald Roper, Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce president and CEO. “The residents of Chicago will be the real winners with access to new jobs created around the casino.”

The Chicagoland Chamber commends the sponsors of SB 1739, Senator Terry Link and Representative Lou Lang, for their leadership in painstakingly negotiating a gaming expansion bill that maximizes economic development and job growth opportunities throughout the state and addresses the concerns outlined by Governor Quinn. “Opponents of SB 1739 are short sighted and ignore the potential economic benefits of gaming expansion that will benefit Chicago and the entire state,” said Roper.

At no other time in our city’s history has winning approval for development of a Chicago casino been so close and within reach. Likewise, the Chicagoland Chamber has never been more committed and engaged in advocating for legislation that will enable Chicago to move forward with a casino development. The revenue generated is critical to the city’s focus on school infrastructure projects to maintain a competitive workforce.

“We need investment in our city now,” Roper said. “Now is the time to show the world that Chicago is a world-class city for locating and growing business headquarters. We need this economic development tool to attract and keep businesses in Chicago.”

The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce is a long-time advocate for a Chicago casino and encourages the members of the Illinois General Assembly and Governor Quinn to support SB 1793 as a much-needed, major economic development initiative that will benefit the state during this financial crisis.
