HOGY PULLS OFF HANSHIN UPSET

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (May 25, 2013) – Supplemented to the race at entry time, William Stiritz’ Hogy proved his connections right by barreling to a 1 ½-length victory in the Grade III $150,000 Hanshin Cup at Arlington International Racecourse on Saturday. With Chris Emigh in the irons, the Scott Becker-trained son of Offlee Wild covered the mile in a brisk 1:34.25.

Stalking the pace set by Nates Mineshaft and Hammers Terror through fractions of 23.30 seconds, 45.73 seconds and 1:09.99 for three-quarters of a mile, Emigh sent the 4-year-old gelding into high gear and quickly took command to draw off for the score.

“We knew there were a couple of speed horses in it and this race was wide open,” Emigh said. “I got in the perfect spot where I wanted to be on the outside and he started dragging me turning for home.”

The win was Hogy’s third over Arlington’s Polytrack surface and his ninth in 16 starts overall. The $86,400 winner’s share boosted his bankroll to $332,800.

Mister Marti Gras rallied from well off the pace to finish second and it was another 5 ¾ lengths back to third-place finisher Hammers Terror.

“My horse ran good, but he needed two turns,” said jockey Eduardo Perez, who rode the runner-up. “He was running good (at the top of the stretch), he never stops.”

Favored Seruni ran fourth, followed by Patrioticandproud, Hattaash, Night Party, All Stormy and Nates Mineshaft to complete the order of finish.

“I was in the one-hole and he prefers to be on the outside,” noted Mike Smith, who was aboard the beaten favorite. “We were trying to work our way out the whole time. I finally got out, but by then they got into a really good pace and they flew home ahead of us. They must have been close to the track record.”

Send off at odds of more than 8-1, Hogy paid $18.40, $8 and $5. Mister Marti Gras returned $4.40 and $2.60. Hammers Terror paid $5.60.
