STRONG FIELD IN GRADE III SIXTY SAILS

The Grade III Sixty Sails Handicap, $200,000 Guaranteed, is back at Hawthorne Race Course after a one-year hiatus. This edition, the 34th running, features eight talented fillies and mares going nine furlongs on Hawthorne’s real dirt track.

Life At Ten won the last edition, in 2010, well before her controversial last-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic later that year.

This year brought together another strong field.

Starting highweight, Carolyn Wilson’s Arena Elvira, trained by Bill Mott, has been a winning machine. She scored in her last five races, including the Grade II Fall City Handicap at Churchill in her final start of 2011. She has been victorious in eight of her 13 career starts and earned over $421,000. In addition, she’s had five races at this distance and won four of them, finishing second in the other. She’ll be ridden by Jose Lezcano.

Juanita, trained by Mike Maker, was claimed for $25,000 in March of 2011 but she has thrived for her new connections, and been a tough competitor in stakes races ever since. She won the Grade II Indiana Oaks in October of 2011. However, it might have been her second-place finish behind Eclipse-winning Havre de Grace that convinced her connections to send her to this spot. Owned by William S. and Graydon Patterson, she’ll be ridden by top local jock Francisco Torres.

Trainer Todd Pletcher always brings live runners and Love and Pride is no exception. This speedy filly, owned by Green Hills Farm Inc., is fresh off a solid second-place finish in the Grade II Top Flight Handicap at Aqueduct. That race was contested in the mud on Aqueduct’s inner track. She has a stakes win at the distance and finished third in the Grade I Gazelle, also at Aqueduct, but on a fast main track. She’ll be ridden by Florent Geroux.
