Fast but off turf at Hawthorne
Well, the turf course was in need of some rain, unfortunately last night we got nearly an inch of rain which was just a bit too much for the grass. We are off the turf, but with a main track that was well maintained and drains extremely well, we have a fast main track for our nine-race card today. After today we have 8 days left of racing but a lot of action still to take place.
Next Saturday we will see the return of the Grade III $200,000 Sixty Sails Handicap for older females around two turns. This race has always drawn quality fields and looks to be lining up to be a great race once again. The following week is our Illinois Champions Day as six stakes races, each worth $125,000 will take place on the day we honor last year's divisional state-bred champions.
We are also one week away from our Spring handicapping contest finals as we will send qualifiers to the NTRA Championships in 2013 in Vegas. The contest has a great format as it is open to all wagers and tracks offered at Hawthorne. The contest is a real money bankroll and players keep what they wager. It is the best format and most realistic format for any qualifying contest out there. For details, or to sign up, visit or call guest services here at Hawthorne.
We want to say congratulations to jockey Francisco Torres who had a great day on Friday, winning five races, including his 2,500th career victory. Torres is looking to run away with the title as leading jockey with 9 racing days to go.
Despite the fast track, the races coming off the turf were hurt by scratches, some that figured, many that didnt
