Jockey watch at Hawthorne

It’s weird to think that this meet is quickly coming to a close as we have only 11 live days of racing remaining for the spring. First of all, I want to thank everyone who made last week and especially Illinois Derby Day a rousing success! Handle and attendance were up substantially and we have been able to carry the momentum through into the start of this week with a very strong day on Wednesday. We have great racing throughout the weekend and it looks like we will have no problems remaining on the turf today and we will see what happens come tomorrow and Sunday for grass racing as there is some rain in the forecast.

Today could be a very memorable one for jockey Francisco Torres as he has live mounts in all nine races on the Friday card. Our current leading rider this spring, Torres is only two wins away from 2,500 on his great riding career which has shown his consistency as he is also only one second place effort from 2,500 2nds on his career as well. In addition to Torres, jockey Tim Thornton is 10 wins away from 1,000 on his young career.

For the meet, Torres is our current leading rider with 34 victories, followed by Thornton with 22 and Constantino Roman with 20 wins. Solid all meet long, trainer Roger Brueggemann still stands atop the trainer standings with 26 wins but this race is not yet over. Frank Kirby has had a great meet as well and is only 6 wins back with 20 wins himself on the meet. Chris Dorris has also had a great meet with 15 victories. For owners, Midwest Thoroughbreds, Inc. leads the way with 16 wins followed by Frank and Sharon Kirby’s Hondo Ranch with 8. One horse has won three times on the meet as Part’n Parcel will look to make it 4 for 4 tomorrow against starter handicap company.

Next weekend we have a great feature with the running of the Grade III $200,000 Sixty Sails handicap for older female runners that looks to have a great field. Two years ago, this race produced a pair of Grade I winners in Life at Ten and Jessica is Back. The race will go as the 9th race on next Saturday’s card.

Only a few changes today as we are fast on the main track and firm on the turf.
