Pick 6 carryover at Hawthorne
Today the focus is on the Pick 6. After a few days where some longshots have scored victories, the Pick 6 has grown to a carryover of $39,671. We have beautiful weather and the wager is worth going after. There are a couple of spots where favorites can be keyed, but it takes just one upset, as we saw when Beaucoup Gold won yesterday’s 6th race, to turn the wager upside down.
Along with the Pick 6 wager, there is another handicapping contest at Hawthorne as we offer our players a chance to qualify for our spring finals. The contest is a real money contest as players keep what they make and the contest is open to all wagers. For details, or to play, sign up at guest services on the first floor of the grandstand.
On Saturday, we saw a track that played very evenly and produced quite a few doubles on the card. Three jocks had riding doubles as Emauel Cosme, Tim Thornton and Florent Geroux each guided home a pair of winners. Trainer Mike Reavis captured both allowance races, each with fine prices as Static Kill was overlooked by the bettors, winning the 5th race and Taptowne won the 8th with a perfectly timed move by Orlando Mojica.
We are only three weeks away from the 55th running of the Grade III $500,000 Illinois Derby. For horsemen, late nominations close on Saturday, March 24 and at that time we will have a clearer picture as to who is focusing on the race. The starting gate can hold 14 and with so many horses still looking for graded stakes earnings, there is a chance we will have a very full field.
A reminder, our Facebook fans of Hawthorne Race Course can check out our version of racing’s March Madness as we match up some of the greatest horses of all time. It’s all in fun, but creates some great discussion.
We had a couple of races decimated by scratches. We’ll see how big the Pick 6 pool gets today as it will need quite a few longshots for any chance of another carryover.
