Hawthorne Racecourse (3/10/12)

Pool party, contests at Hawthorne
What a beautiful day for racing as we have sunny skies and temps expected to near 60 degrees. We have a fast main track and three nice carryovers in the Place Pick 9 ($3,609), Pick 6 ($7,506) and the High 5 ($3,306). This is a very competitive card once again as we only have two scratches on Saturday.
It was nice to walk the backstretch this morning and get a feeling for where horsemen were as we are early in March. Last year, this was the time where it was more of a struggle to fill races and fields were consistently 5 and 6 horses for a couple of weeks. This year, horsemen say they have more horses fit, fields are larger, and the question being asked is when we are starting on the turf course. The answer on the turf is April 18 for the condition book, but if the weather allows, we will be racing on the grass prior to that, possibly as early as the first week of April.
On Friday, nine different riders won races at Hawthorne, including the first win from jockey Chris Russell, who shifted his tack to Illinois from the west coast. Chris rode a very good race, winning aboard Dreymore for trainer Chris Dorris. The Chris Dorris stable had a nice day with a pair of victories, and the barn has heated up over the past couple weeks. Every spring meet, this is a barn to focus on as all of Chris’ horses are ready early and you can catch some at decent prices.
Today we have one of our Pool Parties with Harry Teinowitz from ESPN Radio 1000. Harry will be joining me to cover the early racing action on our pre-race show before taking to the stage to conduct his pool party. Harry has made money for his fans in the past, and always is entertaining. Also, for only $20, guests receive food and drink for two hours while enjoying all of the racing action! For details, or to sign up for the pool party, visit guest services on the first floor of the grandstand.
Today we also have another qualifying contest for the NTRA Championship. The contest is a real money contest which is open to all wagers. It is the best format in the country and worth trying if you plan on playing the races at Hawthorne. Also, we have another of our Road to the Derby contests as today’s focus is the Tampa Bay Derby. Make sure to sign up at Guest Services as someone will win a car and a VIP trip to the Kentucky Derby.
