Wednesday $362,503 Del Mar Pick 5 carryover best bet of 2012

Estimated $2,000,000 pool and low 14 percent takeout creates dream opportunity for players

By Michael Antoniades, Chicago Racing Analyst

Chicago, Illinois - The perfect wave will hit Southern California on Wednesday. I know it to be a fact. However this perfect wave is not for surfers, it is for horseplayers. The first Pick Five carryover in Del Mar history will take place on the first five races and this fifty cent betting opportunity will be extraordinary.

On a day where only one betting favorite was victorious, the Sunday program provided two carryovers for the Wednesday program. The Wednesday Pick 6 on races 3 through 8 will have a carryover of $240,681. The Wednesday Pick 5 will offer a carryover of $362,503 and starts with the first race at 5:00 Eastern, 4:00 Central and 2:00 Pacific.

The Players Pick 5 has been a rousing success in California. The fifty cent minimum allows players of all bankrolls a much better chance to succeed. Selecting two horses a race will cost you only $16, an affordable number to most players. The takeout on the Pick 5 is only 14 percent and when you combine that with the carryover, it creates the perfect wave for the Wednesday program.

Based on my projections, I will estimate the Wednesday Del Mar Pick 5 pool at $2,000,000. I may not take know the Del Mar circuit as well as others, but I know my mathematics. You can bet the big players know theirs as well. At $2,000,000 ($1,637,497 in new money on Wednesday) the takeout on the Wednesday handle would be $229,249. The takeout at $2,000,000 would be $133,254 less than the carryover that is added into the Wednesday Pick 5 pool. Advantage players. Sweet.

In other words $1,637,497 wagered on Wednesday would return $1,770,751 to the winning players. The player advantage in this scenario is more than 8 percent. The winning players would receive more money than is bet on Wednesday unless the Pick 5 pool grows above $2,589,307 in Wednesday money, resulting in a final pool of $2,951,810. Two seven-horse fields on races one and five and a six-horse field on race three will make things a little easier to put that winning ticket together.

From a gambling standpoint this is as good as it gets and you have plenty of time to form your betting strategy. Good Luck with your selections and we will see you for race one on Wednesday afternoon for another great moment where the surf meets the turf… at Del Mar.
