TREASURE BEACH POSITIONED TO ADD TO MILLION-SECRETARIAT LEGACY

All systems remain on ‘go’ for the British-bred European-based Treasure Beach to add his name to the historical connection between the Arlington Million and the Secretariat Stakes.

As the winner of last summer’s Grade I Secretariat Stakes, the Aidan O’Brien trainee now owned by Mrs. Fitriani Hay, Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor remains on target for his attempted encore in the 30th anniversary edition of the Grade I Arlington Million during Arlington’s upcoming one-day International Festival of Racing now just days away on August 18.

The strong connection between one years’ sophomore-restricted Secretariat Stakes and the Arlington Million in succeeding years now goes back two decades and began with Paradise Creek’s runner-up finish in the 1992 Secretariat. That Masayuki Nishiyama color bearer came back two years later in 1994 to win the Arlington Million under the tutelage of Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.

Ryehill Farm’s Awad won the 1993 Secretariat and returned two years later to capture the Arlington Million in 1995.

James Lewis Jr.’s Mecke finished second in the 1995 Secretariat and came back the next summer to win the 1996 Arlington Million.

Michael Tabor’s Marlin won the 1996 Secretariat and returned to the winner’s circle the following summer after taking down winning honors in the 1997 Arlington Million.

Brushwood Stable’s Kicken Kris won the 2003 Secretariat and came back in 2004 to be declared the adjudged winner of the 2004 Arlington Million.

Most recently, Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Kitten’s Joy won the 2004 Secretariat and returned to Arlington in 2005 to run second in the Arlington Million.

Also worthy of mention concerning Treasure Beach in Arlington Million XXX is his Irish-born trainer O’Brien, who captured last year’s Million with Mrs. Fitriani Hay, Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor’s Irish-bred Cape Blanco.

Should Treasure Beach win the upcoming Million, O’Brien would become the first conditioner to capture back-to-back renewals of Million and he would also tie Hall of Fame trainers Charlie Whittingham and Ron McAnally with three victories in Chicago’s centerpiece.

At this time, other European-based Arlington Million invaders include Darley Stud Management’s trio of Britsh-bred Asfare, Irish-bred Colombian and Irish-bred Questioning; Irish-bred Crackerjack King, owned by EFFEVI and ABT Crackerjack King Syndicate, and the Irish-bred Mark Hawtin color bearer Wigmore Hall, who was fourth in last summer’s Million and runner-up in the 2010 Secretariat.

Million XXX contestants at this time that are based in the United States are Phipps Stable’s Boisterous, Priscilla Vaccarezza’s Little Mike, Connie Apostelos’ Papaw Bodie, and Robert Courtney Jr.’s Rahystrada.

The list of European-based candidates for the 36th running of the $500,000 Secretariat at this time is made up of His Highness the Aga Khan’s Studs’ French-bred Bayrir, Moyglare Stud Farm’s Irish-bred Speaking of Which, Yvonne Jacques’ Irish-bred Grandeur, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith and Mrs. John Magnier’s Kentucky-bred Daddy Long Legs and Darley Stud Management’s Kentucky-bred Dark Stranger.

American-based Secretariat prospects are Jim Tafel’s All Stormy, Albaugh Family Stable’s Cozzetti, Donegal Racing’s Finnegans Wake, Reddam Racing’s Handsome Mike, Bluegrass Hall’s Optimizer, and Waterford Stable’s Summer Front.

Still considered likely for the 22nd renewal of the Grade I Beverly D. Stakes as the Arlington Million’s sister race are the European-based foursome of Andrew Stone’s Irish-bred I’m A Dreamer. Darley Stud Management’s British-bred Joviality, Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier, and Michael Tabor’s Irish-bred Up and Gestut Karlshof’s German-bred Kapitale.

American Beverly D. candidates are Flaxman Holdings’ Aruna, Glen Hill Farm’s Marketing Mix, Cheyenne Stable’s Mystical Star, Frank Calabrese’s Romacaca, The Grange House Partnership’s Stars to Shine and Stone Farm et al.’s Upperline.

European-based runners considered possible for the inaugural running of Arlington’s $400,000 American St. Leger at this time are Augustin Stable’s British-bred Aiken, Eastwind Racing and Martha Trussel’s Kentucky-bred Bridge of Gold, Dr. Ronan Lambe’s Irish-bred Galileo’s Choice, Australian TB Bloodstock Jakkalberry SYN’s Irish-bred Jakkalberry, Moyglare Stud Farm000’s Irish-bred Sense of Purpose and Darley Stud Management’s German-bred Zuider Zee.

American-based American St. Leger possibilities are Team Block’s duo of Ioya Bigtime and Suntracer and Team Valor’s International’s Lake Drop.
