Illinois Equine Humane Center to hold open house

If you love horses and nature, you'll want to make the trip out to Big Rock, Illinois for the Illinois Equine Humane Center (ILEHC) Open House, Sunday, May 1 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The ILEHC is excited to welcome visitors to their new headquarters, with the Open House being the first major event to be held at the new location since the operation relocated from Elgin to Big Rock last November.

Visitors will get to meet over two dozen horses that are currently available for adoption, and will also get to meet the organization's official poster-horse, Esther's Egg, or "Iggy" as he's now called. Iggy retired from racing in 2008 at age 13 after having made over 120 starts and with lifetime earnings of nearly $500.000.

ILEHC is located at picturesque Cottonwood Farm on Hinckley Road; visitors to the ILEHC Open House will also be certain to enjoy the beautiful setting and abundant wildlife that frequent the farm or that stop in to drink from the creek that winds its way through the horse pastures.

The ILEHC is an all volunteer organization headed up by its President, Gail Vacca, who oversees all daily activity at the farm. The ILEHC works to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome horses that have been relinquished by their owners or that were previously subject to abuse, neglect, or that are at risk of being sold for slaughter. The ILEHC is also proud to serve as an integral part of the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association's Galloping Out Program that works to transition retiring racehorses into new homes and vocations.

The ILEHC's staff of dedicated volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and introduce visitors to the horses. Adoption, foster care, and volunteer applications will be available as well.

"It's going to be a great event for families to come out and learn about equine welfare and for equestrian enthusiasts who are interested in looking for a terrific new pleasure or sport horse prospect," said Gail Vacca.

Raffle prizes to benefit ILEHC horses will be offered and refreshments will be available as well. The public is cordially invited to join the festivities and show their support for this very worthy cause.
