Monday racing at Hawthorne

What a beautiful day for racing as we have a special 10-race card for the Monday after Christmas. We have a fast main track as we kick off our final week of racing for the fall Thoroughbred meet. We do have a couple of carryovers entering today and players want to keep an eye on those carryovers as we will have mandatory payouts on Saturday for our final day of racing. This week, we race live today, and then Wednesday-Saturday. First post each day is 1:40 pm.

As quietly as he carries himself through his riding, we likely saw the final ride for jockey Tanner Riggs in the finale this past Friday. The young Riggs has always carried himself well around the track and has gained the respect of everyone in the industry. A taller rider, Riggs had a constant battle with weight, and while unable to reduce in the hot box as many other riders do, Riggs reduced weight by working horses, running laps around the racetrack or running on the treadmill on colder days while strictly watching his diet. In speaking with Riggs Friday, he said it is more than likely that he will not return as a professional jockey, but it does not mean we won’t see him around the track in the future.

To his credit, Riggs has put his health, and the effort he could give those who he rode for first in making this decision as he felt he couldn’t do his best for either in his current situation. On a very short career that began in 2005, Tanner did very well for himself. Tanner rode 5,465 races, winning 704 times, finishing second 777 times and running third another 757 races for $11,753,878 in earnings. We wish Tanner the best and hope to see him back in one way or another next year and in the years to come.

We have three carryovers entering today. The Place Pick 9 is $4,872, The Pick 6 is $7,305 and the Pick 5 is $4,997.
