Fast track at Hawthorne

Kudos to Track Superintendent Greg Cardenas as his track crew! On Tuesday night, the rain began falling and kept on going through much of the day on Wednesday. Following the Wednesday races, our track crew stayed on the surface, working through the night, to float water out of the track. Their 12 hours of non-stop track maintenance paid off as we had a track that was drying for workouts and had no standing water on it at all. Following the close of workouts, Cardenas and staff were back on the track working the surface and, assisted by some warmer temps, dry conditions, and winds this morning, we will have a fast main track for racing today. Not only is the work that the track crew did important for today’s races, but it is extremely important moving forward as the removal of water from the surface will keep the track from freezing and thawing in tough weather conditions.

On Wednesday, the track played relatively evenly for a sloppy day. While it appeared speed may be the route to go, La Panchita closed from the back of the pack to win the 4th, and Regal Nurse came on from the second flight to take the fifth. The remaining winners were close to the pace or on the lead, but many of those runners figured, often at short prices.

Jockey Francisco Torres continued his fine riding as he had a three-bagger on Wednesday, winning a pair of those races for trainer Manny Perez. In addition to the Torres triple, trainer Roger Brueggemann also won three races, with three different riders. Finally, a big congratulations to owners Midwest Thoroughbreds, Inc of Richard and Karen Papiese as they had a good day at Hawthorne and a great day nationally, posting their 400th owning win in 2011, a great accomplishment!

With a drying track today, expect things to play very evenly once again. And good luck to a great friend of Hawthorne, Tom Dubrick, as he takes me on in Jim Versus. Also, a happy birthday today to trainer Tammy Domenosky.
