Live chat at Hawthorne

We get a bit of a warming trend today for the Sunday card as temperatures will rise into the 40s today. Looking at yesterday’s races, it appeared early that speed may prevail when a pair of favorites won on the front to open the day, but the track turned out to play evenly, if not a bit back as closers ruled the remainder of the Saturday card at Hawthorne.

In the day’s featured event, the Jim Edgar Illinois Futurity, jockey Florent Geroux continued his fine meet in what looked like a repeat performance of his victory aboard Class Break in the Pat Whitworth Illinois Debutante a week prior. In the Edgar, Geroux was aboard maiden Real Power, one of three entered in the race for trainer Chris Block and owners Rudy and Virginia Tarra. And much like the week prior, Geroux found himself off the early pace in a ground-saving trip. When the pace picked up down the backside yesterday, Geroux waited, making his move on the turn. In the stretch, Geroux kept Real Power’s momentum going, swooping up wide and rolling by another Block runner, Yankee Dealer, for the victory.

The win in the Edgar was one of a pair for Geroux as he also won the finale for leading trainer Roger Brueggemann aboard Gato’s Pirate. Geroux needed those two wins to keep his lead on Constantino Roman as Roman also won a pair of races Saturday.

Today we have another of our online chats on HorseplayerNow.com as we cover the card from Hawthorne. Yesterday we were able to hook up some winners for our fans and I expect much of the same today. To access the chat, visit the Hawthorne website Hawthorneracecourse.com and click on the HP Chats link to tune in. The room opens at 1:15 pm and will cover the entire day’s action.
