CLASS BREAK GRINDS OUT NARROW VICTORY IN PAT WHITWORTH DEBUTANTE

Class Break
Class Break just catches dead-heaters Diva's Diamond and Our Domain.
It wasn’t that it wasn’t expected, it was more like it was unexpected at the sixteenth pole when it didn’t appear that Class Break was going to get up in time. But, photos don’t lie. It was close at the finish, in fact there was a dead heat for second place. When the photo did display, Class Break was the clear winner, by a head, and had just scored her second straight Illinois-bred stakes victory.

The fractions of the race were honest. The went :24.33, :48.01, 1:13.68, 1:41.00 and got the mile and a sixteenth in 1:48.12.

Bred by Renee and Wayne Catalano, trained by Wayne Catalano and owned by daughter Shelbi Catalano, Class Break was stretching out and trying two turns for the first time. She came from off the pace in all of her previous races and utilized that same running style to score her third victory from five career starts.

“I was a little worried,” admitted rider Florent Geroux. “But, she ran the same way the last time so I thought she could do it. My main concern was saving ground early, which we did, and then putting her in position to make her run. I had my sights set on the two horses (favored Our Domain and third-choice Diva’s Diamond) ahead of us at that time but at the three-eighths pole we were going nowhere. However, when she switched leads in the lane, she started picking it up little by little and…we won. I knew we had it at the wire. The 2 horse (Diva’s Diamond) came out on us a little but it didn’t really bother her. That was my fourth win of the day. It was like the cherry on top of the cake.”

Chris Emigh, rider of the post-time favorite Our Domain, thought they held on for second. "She stumbled a little out of the gate. At the end, I thought we had it, but then the light came on. The last couple of jumps she eased off, almost like she was thinking she had to jump the wire."

Class Break earned $53,460 for the victory. She has now earned $150,607 in her career. As second choice she paid $6.00, $2.60, and $2.40. Favored Our Domain returned $2.10 and $2.40 (ok) dead heating for second. Diva’s Diamond returned $2.20 and $2.40 (ok).
