Injury updates, look ahead to Thanksgiving at Hawthorne
A couple of updates from some incidents the past few days at Hawthorne. First, in regards to Giant Oak. Giant Oak was injured in a freak incident on the track a few mornings ago when a loose horse ran into his hind side late in the training morning. I spoke with trainer Chris Block and he said it was a completely freak incident as there were less than 10 horses on the track at the time and it was just unfortunate. After the incident, Chris said Giant Oak didn’t put much weight on the hind leg the remainder of that day. The good news is Chris said he walked Oak the next morning and after favoring the leg the first time around the barn, Giant Oak put weight on it and improved greatly after that. In speaking with Chris’ assistant yesterday, he stated that Giant Oak had continued to improve and it appeared that it may be nothing more than a bruise from the incident and Giant Oak was putting full weight on the leg yesterday. Giant Oak will still be out of action for a while but we expect to see him back at the races.
From our incident a couple of days ago, both horses came away from the race fine, while jockey Inosencio Diego rode the Saturday card at Hawthorne, winning aboard McLard on the turf in the fifth race. Jockey Brandon Meier remains at Loyola Medical Center for observation from a punctured lung and lacerated liver but is improving. After a night of observation in ICU, he may be moved to a regular room to recuperate today. We hope to see Brandon back at Hawthorne in the near future.
On the Saturday card at Hawthorne, we had some fine racing action as we continue to be helped by Mother Nature. With racing still on the turf, and expected to continue through next week, we are able to give those grass runners on final shot before the end of the year. On the Saturday card, a pair of riders had doubles as Tanner Riggs and Florent Geroux each won a pair. Saturday also marked the return of Inez Karlsson to the saddle after over a year off. Inez had a baby in late July and is back in action. While Inez doesn’t plan to ride every day, or ride numerous horses each day, you will see her sporadically through the remainder of the fall meet before she resumes a full slate of riding at Hawthorne next spring. Inez rides three on today’s card.
Today we have another online chat to cover the Hawthorne action on HorseplayerNow.com. The chat room will open at 1:15 pm and cover the entire day’s races. Comments and selections for the card will be given along with taking questions in input from racing fans. Make sure to check in if you can’t make it out for the day’s racing action.
Looking ahead to next week, Hawthorne will be open for live racing next Wednesday, Friday – Sunday, while dark for live racing action on Thanksgiving Day. Hawthorne will be open for simulcasting on Thanksgiving, with racing action from Aqueduct, Calder, Churchill, Laurel, Fair Grounds, Woodbine, Hollywood, and Golden Gate. Next Friday is Man’s Day at Hawthorne with a special $30 buffet and beverage party in the Turf Club. Tricia the Loop Rock Girl will be onsite as well to join in the fun! That Friday will also be the final of our 3:00 pm Friday first posts for the fall before returning to the daily 1:40 pm post time.
