Veterans Day and Fan Friendly Friday at Hawthorne

Fan Friendly Friday here at Hawthorne as the temps have warmed a bit and we have a nice 9-race card. As always, on our Fan Friendly Fridays, we have $2 admission (includes program), $2 food and $2 beer specials. While we salute our Veterans today, we will also honor those who have served our country tomorrow as all Vets, and active military will receive free admission, program and lunch here at Hawthorne. We have many Hawthorne employees that have served and we look forward to honoring all who have served our country.

For today’s racing action, all of the races will be contested on the main track which is listed as fast. When I walked the turf yesterday, it still had a few spots that were too wet to race on, and while we had winds yesterday, we didn’t have a ton of snow, and then the brief snow shower mixed a bit of moisture into the grass as well. For Saturday, I would say we are 50-50 to get back onto the grass, but that determination won’t be made until tomorrow morning.

Looking back at the Thursday card at Hawthorne, nine different trainers won races along with eight different riders. The only riding double on the card came from jockey Orlando Mojica as he won the second and third race. Mojica rode the past summer in Indiana and has quickly picked up business at Hawthorne. Look for him to shine during the remainder of the meet.

For those who can’t make it out to the track tomorrow or Sunday, you can join us online at as Joe Kristufek and myself will cover the 10-race card Saturday and 9-race card on Sunday. Joe knows the Chicago circuit very well and is a great ambassador for the sport. Joe will be conducting the Saturday chat onsite at Hawthorne as he will join me for the pre-race show and then plays the races for a Hawthorne Pool Party on Saturday. For those who haven’t tried a Pool Party before, you should. For just $20, you receive food and drink for two hours, and then you get to share in any of the winnings from Joe’s selections made on the day’s races. It’s a fun time and a great atmosphere onsite at Hawthorne.
