Sunny fall day at Hawthorne
Well, Mother Nature has been our friend for the past two days. While there has been a decent amount of rain in the South suburbs, we have avoided any type of substantial rain. The sun is shining right now after a couple of passing showers and we have a fast main track and a turf course listed as good for today’s nine-race card.
Today we do have some carryovers that are building and those carryovers start in the opener. In the first, the Place Pick 9 has a carryover of $4,704. In the 2nd race, the Early Pick 4 Carryover is $6,244. For the fourth, the Pick 6 is small at $525 but the Pick 5 has a decent carryover of $2,977 for the 5th. All of that is bonus money if you hit any of these wagers, so best of luck today!
Taking a look at the jockey standings, Florent Geroux leads the way with 24 victories. While he has cooled off slightly, he is hitting the board at a strong 46 percent rate this meet. Eddie Perez continues his fine meet with 17 wins while Tim Thornton has tied Perez at 17 after Thornton posted a three bagger yesterday.
Roger Brueggemann still holds onto a strong lead in the trainer standings with 15 victories on the meet. Trainer Chris Block is heating up though as he has 9 wins to put him in second, followed by two-time training champ Joel Berndt who is in third with 7 wins. Midwest Thoroughbreds leads the owner standings with 8 wins, followed in second by William Stiritz with 4 victories as we are closing out the first month of racing.
This weekend we have a pair of solid overnight stakes at Hawthorne for two-year-old turf runners. On Saturday, the $60,000 Added Royal Glint Stakes for two-year-old colts and geldings drew a field of 10 to compete at one mile on the grass while the $60,000 Gold Digger for two-year-old fillies drew an overflow field for Sunday.
Also on Saturday, we will have some Halloween festivities as WXRT Radio will be on hand for a viewer party along with some contests. They will be having a costume contest along with a pumpkin chucking contest. After race 8, the Headless Horsemen will take on Ichabod Crane in a match race as well. Join us for all of the racing action!
