A look back at the Illinois Festival of Racing at Hawthorne

What a gorgeous day today for racing, and we have a special guest as well. Along with a fine 9-race card at Hawthorne, Chicago Blackhawks Head Coach Joel Quenneville will be on site to visit with racing fans and sign autographs. Coach Q will be on the first floor of the grandstand from 1:00 – 2:30 pm for the autograph session, with proceeds from any donations for autographs to go to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund.

Looking back at Saturday’s Illinois Festival of Racing, we had many upsets, as pace battles time and again led to fall apart races and closers picking up the pieces. The most impressive effort on the Festival day card came from the only winning favorite as three-year-old filly Third Chance toyed with a talented field of fillies and mares in the Powerless Handicap. Overall, prices ruled the day as seen from the winning payouts:

Illini Princess – Peyote Patty - $6.40
Sun Power – Sweet Luca - $31.40
Showtime Deb – Class Break - $13.00
Powerless – Third Chance - $3.00
Lightning Jet – Four Left Feet - $31.40
Buck’s Boy – Big Looie - $14.40

Looking ahead, we are only two weeks away from the Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs. The two-day event looks to be lining up as a great event and spaces in our Gold Cup room to enjoy the racing, and our great buffet are also filling up quickly. To reserve a table in the Gold Cup Dining Room for Breeders’ Cup, please contact us at 708-780-3740.

We have great cards for the week ahead as today we have a fast main track and a firm turf with some excellent wagering options. Hopefully you can join us for live racing every day at 1:40 pm and 3:00 pm on Fridays.

Hawthorne Race Course opens for live racing on Saturday, October 1 and races live through Saturday December 31. Live racing will be conducted five days a week, racing Wednesday-Sunday. Live racing will also take place on Monday, December 26. First post daily is 1:35 pm. On Fridays through November 25, first post will be 3:00 pm. Hawthorne Race Course is located in Stickney IL at 3501 S. Laramie Ave. For information on live racing or groups at Hawthorne Race Course, contact Hawthorne at 708-780-3700 or visit Hawthorne online at www.Hawthorneracecourse.com.
