Sunny skies for Hawthorne's Fan Friendly Friday

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday morning at this time we were still on the grass and the turf was in excellent shape. Unfortunately scattered showers came in the afternoon and didn’t subside long enough to keep the turf from becoming slick. With safety always first, I chose not to run the risk of a horse slipping in a turn and took the races off the grass mid day yesterday. Today is a different story. We have sunny skies, a fast main track, and after walking the turf this morning, it was in excellent shape. I am listing it as “Good” right now, but with another 6 hours of constant sun and wind before our first grass race today, we may even border on firm for today’s races.

We have another fine card today for our Fan Friendly Friday with nine races and we packed the fuller fields and turf in the middle of the card to best coordinate with other tracks racing across the country. We have a Pick 6 carryover that is growing and a small carryover in the Place Pick 9.

Tomorrow is the Grade III $200,000 TVG Hawthorne Derby to take place as the 8th race of nine. We have a solid field of 10 to head postward and we will have a firm turf for that event. Graded stakes winner Willcox Inn heads the field, but there are many horses in with a shot to win.

On Sunday, we have a bunch of family events at Hawthorne, highlighted by the camel and ostrich races. The camel race will take place following the 6th race tomorrow and the ostriches will take to the track after the 8th race on the card. Always a fan favorite, we will see if yours truly can become a three-time winner of the camel race!

In Survivor, we entered yesterday with only a few people that had picked 4 winners to kick off the contest. Unfortunately, all four of those contestants were knocked out yesterday along with more than 20 others as we are down to only 52 contestants. I’ll be curious to see if the contest makes it past Illinois Festival of Racing Day next Saturday.

Tomorrow is a great day to enjoy the races from the Gold Cup Dining Room as we will have a great buffet for only $19.95. We have added some items to the buffet and lowered the price. Come out and give it a try and enjoy some of the best seating in the house!

Hawthorne Race Course opens for live racing on Saturday, October 1 and races live through Saturday December 31. Live racing will be conducted five days a week, racing Wednesday-Sunday. Live racing will also take place on Monday, December 26. First post daily is 1:35 pm. On Fridays through November 25, first post will be 3:00 pm. Hawthorne Race Course is located in Stickney IL at 3501 S. Laramie Ave. For information on live racing or groups at Hawthorne Race Course, contact Hawthorne at 708-780-3700 or visit Hawthorne online at www.Hawthorneracecourse.com.
