Turf racing at Hawthorne

What a gorgeous day outside! We have sunny skies, a fast main track and a firm turf course and one of the best wagering cards in the country today. We have three races on the grass (2,6 and 9) and there is value galore on this card.

Looking back at last weekend, the races provided quite a bit of value and the track played very evenly both Saturday and Sunday. Expect much of the same this week as we have this beautiful weather with perfect racing conditions.

Today we drew the Saturday card for Hawthorne Gold Cup day, and what a tremendous card we have! We have 10 races scheduled for Saturday and there will be 113 horses within the body of the races for the 10-race card, along with also-eligibles. Our horsemen have been great about supporting the entry box, and with continued success of this meet, the possibility of a purse increase definitely exists.

For the Hawthorne Gold Cup, we have an excellent field of 10, including five Graded Stakes winners and another three graded stakes-placed runners.

Headlining the field for the Grade II $500,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup is multiple Grade I winner and reigning Illinois Horse of the Year Giant Oak. Giant Oak will be joined in the Gold Cup by (in alphabetical order): Cease, Cherokee Lord, Headache, Maristar, Mister Mardi Gras, Moe Man, Rule, Where’s Sterling, and Worldly.

The Gold Cup will go as race 9 of 10 with a 5:45 pm post. In addition to the Gold Cup, we have a pair of turf stakes on Saturday. The Robert. F. Carey Memorial drew a field of 11 and the Indian Maid Handicap drew a full field of 12.

We look forward to a great week of racing with a Saturday card that is can’t miss!

Hawthorne Race Course opens for live racing on Saturday, October 1 and races live through Saturday December 31. Live racing will be conducted five days a week, racing Wednesday-Sunday. Live racing will also take place on Monday, December 26. First post daily is 1:35 pm. On Fridays through November 25, first post will be 3:00 pm. Hawthorne Race Course is located in Stickney IL at 3501 S. Laramie Ave. For information on live racing or groups at Hawthorne Race Course, contact Hawthorne at 708-780-3700 or visit Hawthorne online at www.Hawthorneracecourse.com.
