Fairmount Park Launches 2011 Thoroughbred Racing Season
Trainers and jockeys excited about early March 15 opening
Track will host second running of the $100,000 St. Louis Invitational for Quarter Horses on June 25
COLLINSVILLE, IL (March 9, 2011) - Fairmount Park opens its eighty-sixth season of live Thoroughbred racing on Tuesday, March 15 at 1:00 pm, with a dynamic eight-race card and highly competitive fields. This season the track was awarded 75 racing days by the Illinois Racing Board, with the action continuing through September 30.
The 2011 weekly schedule starts with live racing on Friday night having a 7:30 pm post time, as well as “Horse Hooky” Tuesday afternoons, 1:00 pm post time. Saturday racing begins on May 7, Kentucky Derby Day, with a special 12:30 pm post time. After that, Saturday racing returns with an evening post time of 7:30 pm.
Fairmount Park will also continue to augment its live racing schedule by operating seven days a week featuring full card simulcasting, which enables fans to view and wager on Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, and Harness racing from the top racetracks across the country and around the world.
Back again this season is Fairmount Park’s ever popular promotional night, “Budweiser Party at the Park” on Friday nights beginning March 18, offering live music with the region’s best bands as well as food and drink specials. Party at the Park will continue through the entire season. Also this year St. Louis sports casting legend Jay Randolph, Sr. will be back with his on-track television show, handicapping all the races every Tuesday.
“Fairmount Park is excited with our early return to live racing and we believe 2011 will be a great season,” said Brain Zander, Fairmount’s president and general manager. “Our leading jockey from 2010, Raphael Manuel Hernandez, will be back to defend his title with plenty of competition coming from perennial challengers Camillo Pitty and Emanuel Cosme. Also, last meet’s leading trainer Ralph Martinez and runner-up Carmelo Mendoza already have strong stables getting prepped over Fairmount’s mile oval.”
