THURSDAY PLAYERS HAVE PLETHORA OF CARRYOVER OPTIONS

By Michael Antoniades, Balmoral Park racing analyst

The hysteria of Derby Day has come and gone, but another big day is coming for many Thoroughbred fans. This Thursday, thanks to a myriad of longshots at Churchill Downs and Hollywood Park, players will have four major carryover pools to shoot for. All this dead money is just waiting to be won, creating incredible wagering opportunities at both tracks. In the minds of most serious bettors, this is what we live for, isn’t it?

Many people will be targeting the Churchill Pick 6 with a carryover of more than $500,000. Without a doubt this pool will create the most interest. The Churchill Pick 6 kicks off the carryover action at 3:25 Eastern and I estimate that with the rollover included, the Churchill Pick 6 pool will exceed $3,000,000.

If you have a limited bankroll and you are looking for the most value, the Hollywood Players Pick 5 is where you want to be. This wager has the lowest takeout ( 14% ) and the lowest minimum wager of 50 cents. When you add the carryover into the mix, you get the rarest of betting opportunities. The Thursday Pick 5 is very likely to pay out more than the amount wagered on the bet.

With a final estimated pool of $500,000 ($392,513 wagered Thursday combined with the $107,487 carryover) the Players Pick 5 yields this incredible statistic. $392,513 wagered on Thursday would create $445,049 in Pick 5 payouts, or 13 percent more than the Thursday pool. This dynamic is created with the low Pick 5 takeout. Any Thursday Pick 5 pool under $767,764 would pay out more than the pool when the carryover is added in. A must play bet.

So do your homework, get your bankroll ready and start structuring those tickets for an action packed Thursday. In summation, I believe that knowing your math is as important as knowing your horses. If you want long term profitable wagering on these sophisticated wagers, so should you.
