Seans Silverdancer Dominates in Pat Whitworth Debutante
Slaphoot Racing LLC’s Seans Silverdancer lived up to her odds in Saturday’s Pat Whitworth Debutante. She was hammered late in the wagering, getting bet down to 8-5 in the last couple of flashes.
She broke on top, set unhurried fractions of :23.76, :47.51, 1:12.79, 1:38.66, with a final time of 1:45.41. She won by nine and a half lengths.
Point Your Finger, a maiden, finished second, just edging out Nikaluk for second place.
This was the second year in a row that Slapshot Racing LLC, trainer Lisa Merritt, and rider Tim Thornton, took the Debutante. That team won in 2009 with Sweet Lemon Chello.
Tim Thornton, winning rider Sean’s Silverdancer, “Going into it, I didn’t think I was going to be on the lead but the 4 (Love This Kitten) stumbled and we wound up in front. I would have liked to have slowed down the pace but I couldn’t slow her down anymore. When I asked her, she just took off. I never even had to uncock my stick. She just did it so easily. I knew she was a game filly because she got bounced around the first time I rode her and she never batted an eye. But, this was impressive.”
Lisa Merritt, “I always knew she was a nice filly. She didn’t win her debut by a lot by but she was banged around during the race and still hung in tough. She galloped out a few lengths ahead of the field after they crossed the wire. I felt confident going into this race but I was unsure how she would handle the distance. As it turned out, it wasn’t a problem. She’s a big strong filly and I think that she’s going to be more that capable against open company. I’m not sure what’s up next for her. She just started racing so she doesn’t need time off. We’ll probably head south for the winter. I’d like to try her out on grass.”
Florent Geroux, 2nd on Point Your Finger: "I had a very good trip, just behind the winner. She ran great, just couldn't catch the winner."
Seans Silverdancer paid $5.20, $3.80, and $3.00. Point Your Finger returned $6.80 and $4.40. Nikaluk brought back $4.60 to show.
