Rider Constantino Roman guided longshot Arrested By Duffy, trained by Emmagene K. Schwan, to the winner’s circle in Wednesday’s second race at Hawthorne. That was the first riding victory for the young Mr. Roman and it came in only the fifth mount of his career.

This 20-year-old grew up in Guerrero, Mexico but has been working horses and galloping horses for trainer Brian Williamson and owner Nancy Vanier for the last four years.

“I want to thank everybody that has helped me to get to this point but especially Brian Williamson,” said Roman through an interpreter.

When asked about the hazing that generally goes on when a rider earns his first win, Constantino beamed. “It took me about a half hour to clean up.”

You could tell that he loved every minute of it.

Hawthorne Race Course is in its 101st year of racing under Carey family ownership. Hawthorne offers the only traditional dirt track for Thoroughbred racing in Northern Illinois. Live racing at Hawthorne runs Wednesday – Saturday through December 31. Post time daily is 1:35 pm. Club Hawthorne membership is Free and available at Guest Services at Hawthorne Race Course.
