Hawthorne kicks off second full week
Back for another live week of racing as we approach our Illinois Festival of Racing and the Breeders’ Cup in the next few weeks. Mother Nature dropped a little bit of rain on us this morning, but it should not affect either the turf or the dirt for today’s races. We are fast and firm and looking forward to a beautiful afternoon.
Checking in on the standings today: After the first full week of racing, jockey Jozbin Santana has cooled off but still holds a narrow lead with seven victories over the surging Tanner Riggs and Chris Emigh, each with six. Eddie Perez and Tim Thornton are tied for fourth with five wins apiece. Trainer Joel Berndt holds the lead on the training end of things with five wins and Chris Block has moved to second with four winners from his first ten starters.
Looking ahead, tomorrow is another edition of our Jim Vs. competition as I will be taking on one of our Hawthorne fans in a friendly Handicapping competition. Longtime Hawthorne fan Tom Dubrick will be joining me to cover the races in-depth prior to the start of the racing day at 1:00 pm and then Tom will join me for the featured race of the day as well. Just for coming on the air with me, Tom will receive 1,000 Club Hawthorne points. Should Tom’s picks beat mine, he will win 10,000 Club Hawthorne points. The competition is open to all of our fans and there are three ways to sign up. You can sign up on Facebook at the Hawthorne Race Course page. You can sign up by sending me a message on Twitter @HawthorneJim or you can visit our Guest Services counter on the first floor of the grandstand to sign up there.
Good Luck as we kick off another racing week!

Featured Race of the Day
The Featured Race of the Day will offer fans a chance to win a $5,000 Wager on the Breeders’ Cup Classic through the Breeders’ Cup Super Bet. Simply play our Featured Race each day with your Club Hawthorne Card and you are automatically entered for your chance to win. The last day to qualify is October 30 and we will draw our winner the following day.
The sixth race is a Maiden allowance race on the turf that has drawn some very nice runners. You can go about seven different ways in here, but I will look to #9 Silver Crush as she makes her fourth start on the grass. She has been getting into the action too late in her recent starts, but today she adds blinkers which should get her into the mix a bit earlier. She comes in off a five-week rest into this race but has a pair of works to keep her sharp and may be able to pull off the upset at a square price.
