More good weather at Hawthorne

What an awesome day, and weekend ahead for racing! Sunny skies, temperatures in the 70s and 80s, fast and firm conditions, and full fields. Looks like a great weekend ahead for racing!

We drew the card for Hawthorne Derby Day yesterday and drew an excellent field for the race. We have multiple runners coming out of the Grade I Secretariat into this spot and any of the eight horses entered could win. Mister Marti Gras comes in off a great workout over our turf course, Call Shot is an up and comer in the three year old division, and Dean’s Kitten, Turf Melody and Yankee Fourtune all come from out of town with an opportunity to make some noise. The Derby goes as the eighth race Saturday of a great nine-race card.

We’re only three days into the meet, but thus far it has been the meet of jockey Jozbin Santana. A new face to the Hawthorne riding colony, Santana has been on fire, winning aboard seven of his first 12 mounts. Only two of his horses have missed the top three and while you can’t expect him to stay this hot, Santana looks to be a force to be reckoned with throughout the fall meet. Jockey Pablo Morales is also off to a good start, as is Tim Thornton, each with three wins apiece. Trainers Joel Berndt and Jamie Ness are tied for the early lead with three wins, and Midwest Thoroughbreds looks to be leading owner for this meet, and in the country as they have three victories as well. Watch out for the Ness stable as they are fully loaded, and coming off a double on Wednesday’s card.

Times were a bit faster Wednesday as horses continue to get accustomed to the conventional dirt surface. It appeared that you had to be closer to the pace to win on Wednesday, but all of the winners on the main track also figured to contend and had that running style. Expect the track to play evenly today as some closers are in with big shots.

Featured Race of the Day

The Featured Ninth Race is an optional claiming allowance test on the turf to go 1 1/16 miles on the firm going. It appears to be a race between #2 Gladsong and #3 Cave Creeker. Yesterday we saw the field fan out into the lane following a quick pace and closers prevailed, it appears the same here. I gave the nod to #3 – Cave Creeker as she makes her first start back after running in the Grade III Pucker Up in her last. That race was the only time she has missed the board on the grass in her career. Look for her to sit mid-pack early and pounce in the lane today.

Make sure to play our Featured Race of the Day with your Club Hawthorne Card daily as you will qualify for the chance to win our Breeders’ Cup Super Bet.
