Welcome back racing fans

Welcome back racing fans for the start of our fall Thoroughbred racing season! This meet is one that we head into cautiously optimistic. Looking at the state of the industry on the national scene, along with in the state of Illinois, we decided to lean on the side of caution in regards to our racing days and purses. Therefore, we have decided to take Sundays off for the fall meet in an effort to keep our fields full and maintain our purses as close to a level as we can.

What this change in schedule has produced for opening weekend, and should produce for the entire meet is very full fields and competitive racing. We have a full barn area and the Horsemen have been very supportive in the entry box. I expect this to continue throughout the meet, and if it does, we may be looking at a purse increase or more races offered as the meet goes on.

The fall meet kicks off with a bang as we are looking at good weather for opening weekend (something we didn’t see much of last fall) along with fine stakes racing Saturday with the running of the Grade II Hawthorne Gold Cup and Grade III Robert F. Carey Memorial. The Gold Cup has some Breeders’ Cup Classic and Marathon contenders in it and the Carey has some Breeders’ Cup Mile possibilities as well.

This is going to be a meet about fun as well. We have specials every day, we are now offering $.50 Trifecta wagers, and we are even offering a chance for racing fans to be on air with myself. Our “Jim Vs.” competition will take place every week, as every Thursday a fan will be on air with me to handicap the day’s entire card, along with joining me for the Featured Race of the Day. Anyone can sign up and it is a completely random draw. To sign up, visit Guest Services, become a friend of Hawthorne on Facebook and send us a message or follow me on Twitter @HawthorneJim and send me a message there.

We kick things off today with our $2 specials for admission w/ program, $2 hot dogs and $2 beers. Sunny skies, a fast track and a firm turf. Let’s have some fun!

Friday’s Featured Race – Race 8

Race 8 Friday is an Illinois-bred first level allowance race to be run at six furlongs. The race has a field of ten with a decent amount of early pace. The key for this race is the horse best suited for the track. In my estimation, that horse is #3 – Star of Paradise. He is a three-year-old facing many older runners, but his success at Hawthorne has shown and after a bad outing on the poly, the connections gave him the remainder of the summer off. He has since had a full month here at Hawthorne, which includes three strong workouts. Look for him to lay back early and come charging at the pace in the long Hawthorne stretch.
