Blame Headlines List of Nominees for Hawthorne Gold Cup

Award Exemplifies Hopeful Future for National and Illinois Horseracing

STICKNEY, IL – Multiple Grade I winner Blame heads the list of 25 nominees for the 74th running of the Grade II $250,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup, to be run at Hawthorne Race Course on Saturday, October 2. The Gold Cup has proven to be a stepping stone for older horses who have pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Classic along with other Breeders’ Cup events. Past Gold Cup Winners Black Tie Affair, Awesome Again, and Buck’s Boy have all made their mark on Breeders’ Cup Day.

In addition to Blame, 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird is also nominated to the Gold Cup. 2009 Illinois Derby Champ and multiple graded stakes-placed runner Musket Man is on the list as is defending Gold Cup winner and recent Grade I Hollywood Gold Cup winner Awesome Gem.

The Gold Cup will be contested at the distance of 1 ¼ miles on Hawthorne’s dirt track and entries for the race will be taken on Wednesday, September 29.

Attached are the full nominations for the Hawthorne Gold Cup.

Nominations for the Grade III $100,000 Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap are also attached. The Carey will be run as part of the undercard on October 2 and will be contested at one mile on the turf.
