Pre-Illinois Derby festivities for Friday
What a day! Record high temperatures are expected for today’s card with a lot of activities to take place. In addition to the nine races at Hawthorne today, we have a pair of radio remotes taking place, $2 specials on food and drink, the outdoor BBQ is open and we will have 32 gorgeous women walking around and looking for your votes.
Today, ESPN Radio 100 will have “The Afternoon Saloon” broadcasting from our Turf Club as the guys will be covering all of the Chicago sports action, along with focusing on the Illinois Derby. Tickets are available for this event which includes food and beverages in our Turf Club.
On the first floor of our grandstand, WLUP Radio will be broadcasting with Eddie Webb on air. Also, the 32 contestants in the Loop Rock Girl 2010 voting will be walking around looking for our fans votes. Make sure to take a walk through the facility and enjoy all of the action.
Looking ahead, tomorrow is Illinois Derby Day and it appears that Mother Nature is going to cooperate with us. The forecast for rain is diminishing and if we do get any rain, the forecast is for it to fall in the morning. If that is the case, we will close the track early for training to prepare for a fast main track for the 11-race card. Last year, it was only 41 degrees on Illinois Derby Day so the 60 degree temps for tomorrow will be welcome.
On the Illinois Derby front, Backtalk and Yawanna Twist both schooled in our paddock on Wednesday and each horse looked great. Today, four Illinois Derby contestants will be schooling before races. Before the first, Game Ball and Dave and Dixie will be in the paddock. Before the second, Backtalk will be back in the paddock. Before the third, American Lion will be schooling in the paddock.
Yesterday, I watched Yawanna Twist breeze through the stretch and he looked very strong. Everything appears to be lining up for a great day of racing tomorrow!
If you are online tonight, please visit www.HorseplayerNow.com between 7:00 and 8:00 pm as Joe Kristufek and myself will be previewing the Illinois Derby. We will have some details and observations, along with selections for the race and some other possibilities to cash on the Saturday Hawthorne card.
Main Track – Fast
Scratch #3 – Jaguar Place
Scratch #3 – Red Plays Rough
Scratch #1 – Rockin In the Rain
Scratch #2 - Gglad
Race 7 - #6 – Biscuits N Beer – This is a runner who has the ability to pull off the upset today. He returns off the layoff but should get a good stalking trip. His workout pattern is consistent and his best races have come over this Hawthorne track.
Race 8 - #9 – Kathleen L – Talk about a runner turning things around, this one has really done so since moving back to Hawthorne. She has posted three victories since the start of the fall meet and looks to get another perfect trip from just off the pace. A repeat of her last race will put her in the winner’s circle once again.
