Jockey Riggs Wins Six on Sunday Card

STICKNEY, IL - Hawthorne Race Course’s current leading rider, Tanner Riggs, had a career day Sunday. Riggs, who also took Hawthorne’s top honors for the 2009 fall meet, started the day with four straight winners. He wound up with six for the day.

He took the first with Storm Lake ($6.00), the second aboard Lovely Trip ($3.40), the third with Bearific ($7.20), and the fourth with Awesome Brew ($10.60). He found the winner’s circle again with Beaded Bag ($18.80) in the seventh and came back in the nitecap with Ridge Run ($8.40).

Storm Lake, Beaded Bag, and Ridge Run are trained by Frank Kirby. Lovely Trip and Bearific are conditioned by Roy Houghton. Joel Berndt trains Awesome Brew.

Riggs extended his lead in the spring Hawthorne standings to 10 over Tim Thornton with 34 wins on the meet. The record for victories in a day is seven by Johnny Heckman back in 1956 for the modern-day Hawthorne record. Mark Guidry and Chris Emigh each rode six winners on a single card.

“It’s like I’m on cloud nine, I can barely believe that it even happened,” stated Riggs. “All I can do is thank those who are putting me on the horses. I have had great success for both Frank Kirby and Joel Berndt and it was nice to get a pair for Roy Houghton today as well. Things have come together the past couple of meets and hopefully it continues that way.”

Hawthorne Race Course is in its 101st year of racing under Carey family ownership. Hawthorne races Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday – Sunday with a first post of 1:35 pm daily through April 25. For more information on racing at Hawthorne, visit our website at www.Hawthorneracecourse.com.
