CATALANO SCORES 2,000TH TRAINING VICTORY

Popular trainer Wayne M. Catalano, aka “Cat,” scored his 2,000th career training victory in Hawthorne Race Course’s third race on Wednesday. Aided by a strong pace and patient ride by Inosencio Diego, Catalano’s Dunscombe made a strong late move, grabbed the lead by the eighth pole, and won going away.

Reached for comment after the race, Cat was understandably happy. “I thought we would win the race. I’m sorry I couldn’t make it back to Hawthorne but, unfortunately, I had business elsewhere. However, my wife and daughter were there to represent me. My wife has been there all along. They’ve all been great wins.

“I especially want to thank Jack Van Berg. He taught me so much about every aspect of racing.

“I also want to thank all the owners that gave me this opportunity. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Catalano will be back in Illinois later this spring.
