THORWARTH, CADMAN SUB FOR CRUGUET, STEVENS IN “YOUNG GUNS VS. CAGEY VETERANS” RACE AT ARLINGTON PARK
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Aug. 18, 2010) – When Triple Crown winning jockey Jean Cruguet had to take off his mount in this Friday’s “Young Guns vs. Cagey Veterans” race at Arlington Park, fellow Triple Crown winning peer Ron Turcotte said he’d like nothing more than to be able to pinch hit. Of course, Turcotte is unable to do so but suggested that the track tap Otto Thorwarth, who portrays Turcotte in Disney’s upcoming “Secretariat” movie, to ride in his stead.
Thorwarth, a winner of more than 1,300 races in his career, has ridden at tracks throughout the Midwest primarily competing on the Arkansas-Kentucky-Ohio circuit. The rider, who hung up his tack in September 2009 to become “Secretariat’s” jockey in the soon-to-be released film, picks up the mount aboard Snapphok for trainer Jan Ely in the one-mile turf race.
At the same time, former jockey Zoe Cadman, who spent most of her brief career on the Chicago circuit, has agreed to step in for former rider Gary Stevens in Friday’s race. Stevens was forced to bow out of his one-race return to the saddle when he was injured over the weekend in New York.
Cadman will pick up Stevens’ mount aboard Lacer for trainer Charlie Livesay. The race, which pits five retired riders versus five members of Arlington’s current crop of jockeys, will offer a special team Match Rival wager as well as the standard menu of win, place, show, exacta, trifecta and superfecta wagering. Whether you bet on the veterans or bet on the young guns, you will want to be here to see this historical race
Since retiring from the saddle in 2004, Cadman has since served as a television racing analyst. After starting her on-air career at Arlington, she moved to the west coast and currently works for the horse racing television network HRTV.
In addition to subbing for Stevens in the saddle Friday, Cadman will pinch hit for the Hall of Fame rider turned broadcaster as part of HRTV’s daylong coverage of Saturday’s International Festival of Racing at Arlington Park which includes the live broadcast of the Grade I Arlington Million, the Grade I $750,000 Beverly D. Stakes and the Grade I $400,000 Secretariat Stakes.
