Backstretch Open, Training Begins Monday

Horses for the fall Thoroughbred meet began arriving at Hawthorne on Thursday in preparation for the opening of the track for training on Monday.

A full backstretch is expected once again as more than 2,300 stalls were applied for and the 1,950 available will be filled to capacity.

Training begins on Monday from 6:00 am – 10:15 am daily with a break at 8:00 am daily.

“I’m extremely encouraged by the amount of stalls that have been applied for this fall at Hawthorne,” stated Assistant General Manager Jim Miller. “We are expecting a very successful meet as we kick off with a bang with three stakes on opening weekend. With a full backstretch, fields should be very strong once again as we expect to produce a fine racing product daily.”

The fall Thoroughbred meet begins on Thursday, October 1 with a 1:20 pm post. Racing will be conducted Wednesday through Sunday with first post of 1:20 pm. On Friday, post time will be 2:30 pm with two special twilight cards on the evenings of October 9 and 16 with a first post of 5:30 pm.
