Kathleens ‘Reels’ ‘em In

Kathleens Reel and jockey Inez Karlsson win the Strate Sunshine Stakes.
Stickney, IL – Eagle Valley Farm’s Kathleens Reel took over as they approached the stretch and easily held off a late challenge from Home’s The Best to win the $52,250 Strate Sunshine Stakes in the Saturday feature at Hawthorne.

Despite breaking from the far outside, Kathleens Reel and jockey Inez Karlsson were able to get good position when both Unspoken Word and Mongoose Gold (posts seven and eight) were both slow from the gate. That enabled the daughter of Lemon Drop Kid to drop over to a comfortable stalking position behind pace setting Pretty as a Smile.

The slow fractions of 24:94 to the quarter and 49:14 to the half, made it difficult for the closers to make up much ground, and by the time they reached the stretch Kathleens Reel was pulling away. The 5-year-old mare opened up a 3 ˝ length lead and maintained that advantage through the lane, stopping the clock in 1:46.19 for the 1 1/16 race for fillies and mares 4-years-old and up. Home’s The Best was five lengths clear of the third place finisher De Star Xpress.

“The jock’s happy; we’re heading for the Sixty Sails!” Those were the words from the winning trainer Frank Kirby, the leading trainer at the Hawthorne spring meet.

“That’s our long-range plan. We were supposed to get in a race at Oaklawn, which we did. We caught a really bad track. We got her up here and a got a good work into her the other day. Hopefully she’ll come out of this good, and we’ll head for the Sixty Sails. That’s our goal.”

Kathleens Reel, in winning for the first time since 2007, earned $31,350 for the victory and pushed her lifetime total to $230,960.

The winner paid $18.40 and keyed a $128.60 exacta with Home’s The Best.
