RUMOR HAS IT TAKES POLAR EXPEDITION STAKES
Marathon Race Established Polytrack Record for 1 ¾ Miles
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (June 27, 2009) – James Glenn and William Patterson’s Rumor Has It had everything his way going gate to wire in Saturday’s $52,500 Polar Expedition for 3-year-olds and up at Arlington Park on Saturday at the seldom used distance of a mile and three-quarters.
Rumor Has It, perfectly timed throughout by jockey Eduardo Perez, broke on top in the six-horse field and was never pressed, drawing off to lead by as many as 20 lengths early before reporting home 5 ¾ lengths in front.
The David Hinsley trainee improved his career earnings to $258,636 and improved his record to five wins from 28 starts. Making his first start on the Arlington Park Polytrack, the 8-year-old Awesome Again gelding completed the distance in 3:03.84.
“He likes to run a distance,” commented Perez. “It looked like he was running off, but he was relaxed. It looked like he was working out in the morning, and then he started running again. This little horse gives everything he can.”
Gangbuster, the 4-5 favorite, completed the exacta, while Lemonade Kid took the spot for show.
“When you have a horse with lone speed, there wasn't anything I could do about it. My horse doesn't have speed to begin with,” said Campbell. “He really didn't fire. I was asking him for everything at the half-mile pole. He ran second, but it wasn't like he was finishing. If my horse fires, believe me I'm closing ground, but I was all out at the half-mile pole.”
Rumor Has It returned $13.80, $5.20, and $3.60. Gangbuster paid $2.40 and $2.20, while Lemonade Kid paid $4.40.
Completing the order of finish were Moral, Eighteenthofmarch, and Budge Man.
