LONGSHOT SNAPPHOK TAKES CHESTER HOUSE STAKES
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (May 9, 2008) – Al Moorhouse’s Snapphok burst on the scene inside the furlong pole and drew off to win the $53,900 Chester House Stakes by 1 ¾ lengths on Saturday at Arlington Park. Inez Karlsson rode the son of Unreal Zeal, who covered the mile and a sixteenth over soft turf in 1:51.12.
Winless since capturing an allowance race over Arlington’s Polytrack main track last September, Snapphok, who has shown an affinity for soft turf, was largely ignored by the wagering public but the upset victory was not a complete surprise to his trainer Jim Gulick.
“I expected him to run well,” Gulick said. “The soft turf fits him and it maybe it hindered some of the others but it certainly didn’t effect him in a negative way.”
“I settled in behind the speed and saved as much ground as I could,” Karlsson said. “On the turn I had the choice of whether I wanted to go outside or inside and the rail opened up perfectly. When I asked him to go, he re-broke.”
The win was the sixth in 35 starts for Snapphok, who picked up $32,340 for the victory to push his earnings to $213,040.
Telling was second in the seven-horse field, followed by Tiger Woodman who finished third. Major Rhythm, Minister’s Joy, Yankee Injunuity and Alone At Last completed the order of finish.
“He ran good, but we ran into some issues,” said jockey Rene Douglas, who was aboard the runner-up. “I would have been happy if he would have won, but he still ran well.”
Sent off at odds of 23-1, Snapphok paid $48.40, $13.60 and $5.60. Telling returned $3.20 and $2.40. Tiger Woodman paid $3.
