Another Bomb dropped on Hawthorne Lawn

Tobin's Royalty

The string of longshot winners on the grass continued mercilessly in the $50,000 Wooden Star Stakes when 20-1 Tobinís Royalty led start to finish to win Hawthorneís Saturday feature race. Over a course listed as good, Tobinís Royalty covered the 5 Ĺ furlongs in a time of 1:04.09. The race was restricted to fillies and mares 3-years-old and up.

Trained by Tammy Domenosky and ridden by Tanner Riggs, the five-year-old Arizona-bred (when was the last time you saw that around here?) experienced little trouble reaching the top despite breaking widest in the field of 12. Tobinís Royalty got to the quarter in a sparkling 21.89, but it was pretty much uncontested, and she remained unchallenged until the final turn.

Thatís when even-money favorite Sea the Joy took a shot at her, although that challenger was rebuffed fairly easily. From there it was clear sailing to the wire, and despite understandably tiring near the finish, she remained two lengths clear of fellow bomb Candy Cane, who closed very well for second. It was a neck back to Defiant Darling who completed the $14,754 trifecta.

The $42.20 payoff on the winner joins a list of improbable stakes winners in the last eight days: Strait of Mewsina, $41.20 (Hawthorne Derby); Labar, $63.40 (Mary Keim Stakes); and Yankee Injunuity, $68.00 (Don Ciccio Stakes.)

Someone, somewhere is just a little bit wealthierÖI know someone who isnít. Any guesses?
