Hawthorne gets January dates once again
Last year, for the first time in its long and illustrious history, Hawthorne Race Course was awarded Thoroughbred racing dates into January. The success of that experiment equated to a renewal of such dates in 2009. On Monday the Illinois Racing Board granted Hawthorne nine additional racing days and therefore the Fall/Winter meet will extend until January 11.
So while all the news regarding racing dates, particularly on the harness side, was not so glowing, there was at least something positive to lead us into our imminent re-opening on Friday, September 26.
For the record, there will be 75 live racing days, which include three graded stakes, The Hawthorne Gold Cup (G II), The Robert F. Carey Memorial (G III), and the Hawthorne Derby (G III).
The Phil Georgeff Illinois Festival of Racing returns on November 1, and two-year-olds will be spotlighted in the Pat Whitworth Illinois Debutante and the Jim Edgar Illinois Futurity on December 6 and 13 respectively.
Friday post time through November 28 will be 2:35 pm central time while all other live racing days will begin at 1:35 pm central time.
No live racing on Monday and Tuesdays, with the exception of Columbus Day, Monday, October 13. We will be dark on Wednesday October 15.
Hawthorne Race Course will begin its Fall/Winter Thoroughbred meet on Friday, September 26, 2008 and continue through January 11, 2009.
