Horses A-Plenty for Spring Opening

Stickney, IL – When Hawthorne Race Course was granted January racing days by the Illinois Racing Board, it meant that the Spring Meet would begin a few weeks later than usual. The goal for all interested parties was to have more horses on the grounds for opening day and a chance for better weather in which to operate.

As for the weather, we’ll continue to cross our fingers, but as for the horseflesh, which continues to accumulate on the backstretch, there can be no denying the positive effects of the March 7 opening. Horse population through the winter has remained stronger than ever as over 1,000 horses trained through the six-week dark period leading into the spring opener. Additionally, another 500-600 horses are expected to be on the grounds when racing begins on March 7, bringing the horse population to well over 1,500 horses.

The numbers also showed that the tweaked racing schedule was beneficial to handle, as figures for the two week racing period in January far outperformed those of the traditional late February, early March start. Heading into the March 7 opener, Hawthorne looks to improve on a nearly seven percent rise in total handle provided by the additional January racing dates.

“I expect us to have a very good meet this spring,” stated Hawthorne President Tim Carey. “Our horse population is up, the track has been in tremendous shape for training and we have more horses ready to run than ever. With our strong January period kicking off 2008, I believe we will continue to show strong handle numbers for the spring period.”

With opening day just around the corner and a stakes schedule that includes the Illinois Derby and the inaugural Hartack Memorial, Hawthorne has good reason to be optimistic for a successful meet.

Hawthorne Race Course’s Spring Thoroughbred meet begins on Friday, March 7 and will continue through Monday, April 28. Live racing will be conducted Thursday through Monday, regular first post 1:35 pm central time. Hawthorne Race Course is located at 3501 Laramie Avenue, Cicero, IL 60804, gates open daily at 7 am.
