Instill, Wainright Forging Ahead
Stickney, IL – It may still be premature to say that Illinois Futurity winner Instill is on the Triple Crown trail, but his trainer John Wainwright is hoping he has more than just a top notch Illinois-bred in his racing stable.
“Yeah, I think this horse has quality, and I’ve mapped out a long term plan for him, but we’ll obviously take it race to race and see where we are,” said Wainwright. “Right now we plan on starting him in the Battaglia (John Battaglia Memorial Stakes) at Turfway and if all goes well we’ll be at Hawthorne for the Illinois Derby.”
Since the Futurity, Instill has raced once, a fourth place finish in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park, but his effort was probably better than it appears on paper.
“He broke a little slow and might have taken a while to handle the track. Chris (Emigh) told me it was the first time he got dirt kicked in his face so it was a learning experience,” said Wainwright.”
Instill has worked twice since the Hot Spring’s endeavor and continues to leave his trainer optimistic about the future.
“We worked him seven furlongs in about 1:27 yesterday morning (at Hawthorne) and he went real well. Between him and Dakota Rebel I’ve got a couple of nice horses to work with this spring.”
The Battaglia Stakes will be run on Saturday, March 1, and with a strong effort there, Instill could become a legitimate contender for the big “Derby” races down the road.
Hawthorne Race Course’s Spring Thoroughbred meet begins on Friday, March 7 and will continue through Monday, April 28. Live racing will be conducted Thursday through Monday, regular first post 1:35 pm central time. Hawthorne Race Course is located at 3501 Laramie Avenue, Cicero, IL 60804, gates open daily at 7 am.
