Instill Draws Away in Jim Edgar Illinois Futurity
Stickney, IL – Prominent from the start, Sharon Morgan’s Instill overtook pacesetter P D Q Kiddo on the far turn, withstood a strong bid from favored River Bear, and drew off to an emphatic five length victory in the $114,700 Jim Edgar Illinois Futurity.
The Saturday feature race for two-year-old colts and geldings, bred in the Prairie State, was a rematch of sorts between River Bear and Instill, with the former having won an allowance race by 4 ¼ lengths in their last start.
Today, perhaps aided by a six-pound weight advantage, Instill turned the tables with relative ease, as the son of Proud Citizen was ridden confidently by Jockey Chris Emigh throughout the one mile and one sixteenth event.
“His last was the first time he went long,” said Emigh. “I guess he loved this lovely weather today. I just had horse the whole way and I rode him with confidence, just hoping I had the best horse….and I did.”
River Bear was a clear second, while the maiden Best Buddy closed mildly for third.
Trained by John Wainwright, Instill won for the second time and pushed his career earnings to $107,820.
Despite intermittent snow throughout the day, the track was listed fast, the time of the race, 1:47.77.
Instill paid $9.80 $4.40 $3.60 as the second choice in the wagering. River Bear returned $3.80 and $3.00. Best Buddy paid $3.40 to show.
