Block Entry One-Two In Pat Whitworth Illinois Debutante

Stickney, IL – The $64,000 question going in to the Pat Whitworth Illinois Debutante was which 2 year old filly would handle the one mile and one-sixteenth distance. It turned out to be the only filly that had handled it in the past.

The Virginia Tarra Trust-owned and Chris Block trained Link to My Heart proved her distance running is not limited to the turf as she rallied sharply through the lane to overhaul a game but tiring Carbella, to win the $110,025 Pat Whitworth Illinois Debutante by 1 ¼ lengths.

The other half of the Tarra/Block entry, Apple Martini, also came running late to snag the place from Carbella. Carbella easily held third, five lengths clear of Bernt to Run who rounded out the superfecta.

The time for the race run over a fast track was 1:47.14.

Eddie Razo Jr. rode the winner: “It’s nice to win on a filly that I’ve been on since the beginning. Today Chris told me to just break and let her relax. She handled the dirt with no real problem and when I asked her to run she did.”

Trainer of the top two finishers, Chris Block: “I thought she (Link to My Heart) was a turf horse. I convinced Rudy and Regina (Tarra Trust) to take her down to Churchill to run her in a grass race after her win here.….She’s small but she’s mighty and she gives a big effort every time…I figured that if she got the trip today, she had the pedigree to get the distance and experience around two turns weighs heavily in these races and many of the others didn’t have that experience….We felt confident in both horses and the other filly didn’t disappoint either."

Chris Emigh on the effort of pacesetter Carbella: “Turning for home I thought I was going to win it, the horse was ready to run, she really took off for me. The last sixteenth she didn’t feel like she was really tired, but the other two went by me. They were the only two that had run long already and I think that helped.”

Link to My Heart returned $12.80 $6.00 and $4.20 as the third choice on the board. Uncoupled for wagering purposes, Apple Martini paid $8.40 and $5.20. Carbella returned $3.80.
