Ten Races on Tap for Opening Day
Bright sunny skies and unseasonably warm weather are expected for Hawthorne’s opening day on Friday, September 21, hopefully portending a climatically pain-free racing season at the Stickney oval.
Ten races are on tap for the opener, providing horsemen and horseplayers alike a little bit of everything, but as Hawthorne Racing Secretary Gary Duch declares, “It’s just great to get the ball rolling, and to introduce to our track some new faces like Judy Hicklin, Justin Evans and Jamie Ness.”
Friday’s card begins with a two-year-old optional claiming event with a field of six, but after that, each race has no fewer than eight entrants, capped off with a 12-horse field in the nightcap.
There are two grass races, a couple of two-turn dirt races and six sprints to get the 73-day meet started, with the feature being a $30,000 non-winners of two, for three-year-olds and up. They will go one mile and one sixteenth on the turf course. David Garner’s Glamour Guy has been installed the 3-1 morning line favorite.
In addition to the usual array of wagering options, including rolling pick three’s beginning with the first race, the ten cent superfecta will be available in all races except race number one.
New post time for the fall racing season is 1:35 pm central time.
