Jockeys Danush Sukie and Randall Toups Escape Serious Injury
STICKNEY - The Thursday Hawthorne race day was marred when two horses went down during the running of the second race.
Heading down the backstretch of the 6-furlong race for maiden fillies and mares, it appeared that Sweet Eileen may have had a heart attack, sending jockey Randall Toups sprawling to the muddy racetrack. Following close behind and unable to avoid the stricken filly was Peekabootoyou, and her jockey Danush Sukie. When that horse and jockey pair fell over Sweet Eileen, Sukie was thrown hard to the track and had to be carried off via stretcher.
Peekabootoyou went back to the barn apparently no worse for wear, but Sweet Eileen died instantly.
Sukie was hospitalized with back and abdominal pain, but at the time of this writing, appeared to be only shaken up.
Toups, originally thought to have been unscathed, later complained of hand pain and was also brought to the hospital as a precaution.
Hawthorne Race Course races five days a week, Thursday through Monday through April 29. Located at Cicero or Laramie Avenues at 35th Street, gates open daily at 7 am. Call (708) 780-3700 or visit the Web site at www.hawthorneracecourse.com.
