Star By Design tops Hula Chief Stakes field
As the weather warms up and Hawthorne Racecourse patrons shake the chill of winter, get ready for the Hula Chief Stakes, the feature event on Saturday’s nine race card. The six-furlong feature event for 4 year olds and upward will carry a purse of $45,000 and be run as the 8th race on the program.
Leading the field postward is Asiel Stable’s Star By Design. The 4-year-old Distorted Humor gelding has won two straight including a game win at the same distance earlier in the meet. Veteran jockey Carlos Silva will get the leg up for trainer Richard Hazelton.
Classy veteran Straight Line also figures to be competitive in this lineup. Trained by Brian Williamson, Straight Line has won ten of 25 lifetime starts, good for earnings approaching $500,000. The 5-year-old son of Boundary is returning from a brief freshening, but has worked sharply for this race and figures to be prominent throughout.
Other contenders for the sprint include a pair of Christine Jank’s geldings, High Expectations and Fifteen Rounds. Both horses have been laid up since the fall, but either one's best effort could be enough to win.
Rounding out the field of seven are Bye Bye Crafty, Out For A Spin and Catalissa, a 7-year-old Tale of the Cat gelding trained by red-hot trainer Roger Brueggemann.
The Hula Chief Stakes offers exacta, trifecta and superfecta wagering and kicks off the late daily double.
Hawthorne Race Course is scheduled to conduct 119 Thoroughbred and 39 harness live programs in 2007. Located at Cicero or Laramie Avenues at 35th Street, gates open daily at 7 am. Call (708) 780-3700 or visit the Web site at www.hawthorneracecourse.com.
