EXCELLERANT ADJUDGED SAFELY KEPT WINNER

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sept. 13, 2007) – John M. Tucker’s Excellerant was declared winner of the $47,700 Safely Kept Stakes on Thursday at Arlington Park following the disqualification of Dunwoody Farm’s Shriek, who was first under the wire by a neck, for whip interference in deep stretch of the six-furlong dash which was clocked in 1:10.20. Eusebio Razo Jr. was aboard the William Connelly-trained daughter of Lite the Fuse.

Shriek, under E. T. Baird, was first away from the gate and led every step of the way through fractions of :22.80, :45.58 and :57.63. She drifted out in the lane and Baird’s whip was said to have made contact with Excellerant, resulting in the disqualification.

The Safely Kept was the first victory of the year for Excellerant, who captured the $75,000 New Year’s Eve Stakes at Mountaineer Park last December. In her most recent start, she finished second beaten a neck in the $85,000 West Virginia Secretary of State Stakes at Mountaineer. Thursday’s win, her fifth in 15 starts overall, was worth $28,620 and boosted her career earnings to $182,758.

The Christine Janks-trained favored entry of Modjadji and Pretty Jenny finished third and fourth, respectively, followed by Jennypike, Come to Light, Dixie’s Jubilee, Blue Canyon and Saint Pegasus.

Excellerant paid $7.80, $6.20 and $3.20. Shriek returned $15.80 and $5.40. The Janks-trained entry paid $2.10.
