MARIETTA SCORES VICTORY IN GRADE III ARLINGTON OAKS
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Aug. 18, 2007) – Darley Stable’s Marietta made a five-wide move entering the stretch and drew off to win the Grade III $100,000 Arlington Oaks by 1 ¾ lengths on Saturday at the suburban Chicago oval. Mark Guidry rode the Eoin Harty-trained daughter of Machiavellian to a Polytrack record of 1:49.39 for the nine-furlong distance.
Marietta sat well off a pedestrian pace of :25.34, :49.54 and 1:13.54 set by 16-1 outsider Marquise before launching her rally with about three-eighths of a mile to run.
“I thought she was a little too far out of it going down the backside, especially after that opening quarter in 25,” Harty admitted. “Mark knew what he was doing and she made a big run.”
The victory was the second Grade III stakes of the year for the sophomore filly who captured the $200,000 Iowa Oaks at Prairie Meadows in June. She earned $58,800 to boost her bankroll to $245,523 while improving her overall record to three wins from eight starts.
Humble Janet was second in the seven-horse field, 1 ¼ lengths clear of third-place finisher Marquee Delivery, followed by Aspiring, Kiss With a Twist, even-money favorite Mini Sermon and Marquise.
“I got bottled up a little but as soon as I was able to get out – she started running,” said Robby Albarado, who rode the runner-up. “But the winner got loose on the outside first. I was getting to her late but I couldn’t quite catch her.”
“I had no excuses,” said Rene Douglas of his trip aboard beaten favorite Mini Sermon. “My filly didn’t fire. She relaxed really nice for me. I was in great position – but then she didn’t fire, that’s all.”
Sent off at odds of 3-1, Marietta paid $8.80, $4.80 and $4.40. Humble Janet returned $5.80 and $5.20. Marquee Delivery paid $4.20.
